Re: Lyrics?
Thu, October 12, 2006 - 8:53 AMSweet! Thanks! Quite a different version from the one I learned (apparently not so well). It's always fascinating to see the different take offs of different songs.

Re: Lyrics?
Thu, October 12, 2006 - 5:45 PMSheesh I sang this one as a round a million years ago. Here are some other verses I know, more may pop up later.
Rose, Rose, Rose, Rose Will I ever see thee wed? I will marry at thy will sire -at thy will.
I don't remember these verses completely since in our arrangement I didn't sing the whole thing but here is what I remember of them. I'll see if I can dig out the CD and post it later:
Carve thy name on moss covered stone - on moss covered stone.
Oh Poor bird, why ar't thou, singing in the shadows at this late hour - at this late hour?

Re: An Poor Bird
Sat, January 26, 2008 - 5:04 PMI think that in _Rise Up Singing_ the "Ah! Poor bird..." lyric is rendered thusly:
Ah! Poor bird!
Take they flight
Far above the shadows
Of this sad (dark?) night
I've always understood this verse to be a countermelody to the Rose/Soulcake melody.

Re: Lyrics?
Thu, October 12, 2006 - 8:05 PMLet me see.. I know this one.. or at least a version
Rose, Rose, Rose Red, Will I ever see thee wed
I will marry at thy will sire, at thy will
Hey Ho, Hey Ho.. meat nor drink, nor money have I none
and Yet I am to be married, hey ho-----
I will not be my mother's son
I will not be my father's daughter
I will be a fiddler free and fiddle where I will
Ding Dong, Ding Dong, Wedding bells on a april morn
Carve your name in a moss covered stone stire, carve your name
Ah poor bird, why art thou
Flying through the shadows
At this dark hour.
--- Can't remember any more rounds. I seem to remember the story ebing about a girl being forced to marry against her will and even though she loves another. She ends up jumping off a cliff on her wedding day.. -

Re: Lyrics?
Sat, January 26, 2008 - 5:01 PMI, too, understand this to be a conflation of two other lyrics... but it works *quite* well as is!
There's also the Sunday-school lyric:
Love, love, love, love
This shall be our highest call
Love thy neighbor as thyself
For God loves us all
I recorded a similar version to that on my recording of rounds & chants, along with a variation on this one, which I've heard in several different quarters:
Dear friends, dear friends,
Let me tell you how I'm feeling
You have given me great pleasure
I love you so

Re: Lyrics?
Tue, May 26, 2009 - 12:11 PMI learned (in a round):
Thou poor bird, mournst the tree.
Where sweetly though didst warble in thy wandering free.
Ah poor bird. Take thy flight. Far above the sorrows of this sad night.
Hey ho nobody's home no meat, nor drink nor money I have none.
Still I will be merry, hey ho nobody's home no meat nor drink nor money I have none.
Still I will be merry, hey ho nobody's home.
Rose, rose, rose red when will I see thee wed.
I will marry at thy will sire ding dong ding dong.
Funeral bells on a september morn.
Rose my rose is dead. Dead and gone.
